It was one of the larger group therapy sessions Helena has hosted in a long time. Approximately 700 people gathered at the capitol building taking part in an organized protest against Trump and Musk/DOGE. It was one of numerous "Hands Off" protests planned nationally. Though the majority of attendees would be described as part of the "boomer" generation, there were also young children present. Media representatives from The Sentinel avoided taking pictures of the children. Our team also will not post pictures of protestors who attended and were barely clothed.
Expected themes appeared, such as "hands off social security" and "defend democracy," (Social Security is not getting cut, and America is not a democracy). Many other chants and signs called for resistance, support to Ukraine, smashing fascism, and eradicating "NAZIs."
During an open mic session following the main speakers, protestors stood up to speak in support of public libraries, furries and therians (people who identify as animals), the prevention of climate change, LGBTQ alphabet needs, and general revolution. Some appeared as fake ANTIFA members. Actual members of Big Sky 55, Indivisible, and Democratic Socialists of America were present, as well as other minor groups.
One guest speaker claimed that VA funding cuts are now impacting Veteran suicides, also claiming that this issue was under control during the Biden administration.
Another exhorted attendees to call politicians saying that though they couldn't change politicians minds, "what we have to do is scare them."
The final quote of interest came from a trans-activist claiming that "trans people" are scared to travel overseas because "trans people may not be able to reenter the country."
Most speakers broadcasted a message of fear followed by the need for continued resistance and revolution.
The protest was mostly peaceful, but there were a few attempts to intimidate media reporting on the event.
