The Divine Foundation Of Our American Republic

From the very beginning, the United States of America was conceived and established with a profound recognition of the Christian God’s sovereignty, authority, and providence. Our Founding Fathers did not shy away from invoking the Creator as the ultimate source of rights, justice, and national destiny. This is not abstract philosophy, but an explicit declaration woven into the foundational document of our independence.

God in the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence—our charter of freedom—openly acknowledges God in four distinct and powerful ways:

  1. “The Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” The first sentence declares: “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” Here the Founders grounded America’s right to exist not merely in human will, but in the higher moral order established by Nature’s God.

  2. “Endowed by their Creator” The most famous passage proclaims: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Our rights do not come from government, kings, or majority vote. They are gifts from God Himself—unalienable because no earthly power can legitimately revoke them.

  3. “The Supreme Judge of the World” In the closing appeal, the signers wrote: “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States…” They submitted their cause to divine judgment, recognizing God as the final arbiter of justice and truth.

  4. “Firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence” The document concludes with these stirring words: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” The Founders placed their full trust not in their own strength, but in God’s guiding and protecting hand.

These references were deliberate. The men who risked everything for independence understood that a nation without God at its foundation would eventually collapse into tyranny or chaos.

God’s Enduring Place in American Government

This reliance on God did not end with the Revolution. It has been embedded in the ongoing life of our republic:

  • The President of the United States has taken the oath of office with a hand upon the Bible, invoking God as witness to his solemn duty.
  • The Ten Commandments are prominently displayed in the United States Supreme Court and in many other halls of justice across the land, a constant reminder that true law finds its ultimate source in the moral order established by God.
  • Every session of Congress opens with prayer, seeking divine wisdom for the deliberations that shape our laws.
  • The words “In God We Trust” are engraved on all our currency and coinage—the very medium of our commerce—declaring to the world and to ourselves where our confidence ultimately rests.
  • The Pledge of Allegiance affirms that we are “One Nation Under God.”
  • Every state constitution in the United States—including Montana’s—acknowledges God in its preamble, reflecting the universal understanding among the founders of the several states that civil government depends upon divine blessing.

These are not mere historical curiosities. They are living testimonies that faith in God has been, and remains, integral to the American system of ordered liberty.

A Warning for Our Time

Yet today, forces are actively at work in America—and right here in Montana—that seek to marginalize, diminish, and ultimately erase the public recognition of God from our national life. Under the banner of “neutrality” or “progress,” they would scrub every reference to the Creator God from our founding documents, institutions, and public square. This is not harmless secularism. It is a direct assault on the philosophical bedrock of our republic.

We must recognize this pattern for what it is. Communism, in all its forms, has no room for God. In such systems, the State itself becomes the only god permitted—omnipotent, all-knowing, and jealous of any higher allegiance. History shows the bloody fruits of such godless regimes: the suppression of conscience, the devaluing of human dignity, and the ruthless consolidation of power. Whether labeled communism, socialism, or any softer variant trending in that direction, the trajectory is the same: replace submission to God with submission to the State.

We must never allow this on our watch. As citizens and stewards of this inheritance, we are called to resist every effort to secularize our heritage or to treat the acknowledgment of God as a threat rather than our greatest strength. The rights we cherish—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—cannot long endure if severed from their divine Source.

Let us therefore renew our “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.” May we, like our Founders, pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor to preserve this nation under God.
