I, Bill Lussenheide have the privilege of serving as the Treasurer of the Montana Republican Party, and I also serve as the elected Central Committeeman for District 24 here in Ravalli County.

At a recent Ravalli County Central Committee meeting, a self-styled, self-appointed “leader” confidently declared that the finances of the Montana Republican Party are somehow hidden, mysterious, unknowable, and that no one really knows where the money goes—or whether the Montana GOP is even financially viable.

It was quite the performance. Unfortunately, it bore little resemblance to reality.

As Treasurer, I take those kinds of accusations seriously because they aren’t merely colorful opinions—they are demonstrably false.

Here’s how the real world works.

Every single financial transaction of the Montana Republican Party—every dollar raised, every dollar spent, every report filed—is overseen by the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Those records are public and available for anyone with an internet connection and a few minutes of curiosity. There are no secret vaults, no smoke-filled back rooms, no treasure maps, and no mysterious briefcases changing hands under the light of a full moon.

There are no secrets.

I personally review the committee’s transactions, bank records, reconciliations, and financial reports on a regular basis. Not a penny passes through our accounts without scrutiny. I prepare financial reports for our Board of Directors, and I insist that our Executive Director and Party Chairman review them as well. Multiple sets of eyes examine our finances because accountability isn’t a slogan—it’s a responsibility.

There is absolutely no self-enrichment or self-inurement taking place. In fact, the irony is almost humorous. The Board members—including me—serve entirely as volunteers. We receive no salary. We drive many miles at our own expense, purchase our own computers and phones, and devote countless hours, and do so because we believe in the principles of the Republican Party—not because there’s some mythical pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow.

Our organization has operated with only one paid employee over the past year—someone who could almost certainly earn considerably more in the private sector. We maintain a modest tiny office in Helena, not some marble palace with gold-plated doorknobs and valet parking.

The Montana Republican Party is financially sound. I have developed careful budgets, income projections, and prudent spending guidelines to ensure the Party remains on solid financial footing both today and into the future. Fiscal responsibility isn’t something I preach it’s something I practice every day.

So, when someone suggests that our finances are cloaked in mystery, I’d gently recommend replacing speculation with documentation. The facts are publicly available. They’re filed with the FEC. They’re audited through public disclosure. They can be examined by anyone willing to spend less time chasing rumors and more time reading reports.

Facts are wonderfully stubborn things.

Serving as Treasurer is an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously. The members of the Montana Republican Party deserve complete transparency, sound fiduciary stewardship, and honest financial management. That is exactly what they are receiving.

I hope this clears the air for anyone who may have heard otherwise. Transparency is not something we fear—it is one of the reasons the Montana Republican Party continues to earn the confidence of its members.
