Every Montanan who has taken a long road trip across the state knows the moment. You pull into a gas station somewhere between here and the next town that may or may not actually exist. You stretch your legs, visit the washroom… and then you pass that shelf.

You know the one.

A neat little lineup of plastic-wrapped sandwiches and suspiciously optimistic plates of sushi, glowing under fluorescent lights like a culinary dare. And suddenly your brain enters a state of full philosophical conflict. On one side: hunger. On the other: survival instincts.

Then you notice the little sticker on the package that might as well read:
“EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK.”

Now that’s not exactly the kind of message that inspires great public trust. Studies suggest the confidence level for gas station sushi hovers somewhere around 26%, give or take a roll of spicy tuna.

Which brings us to Dave Bedey, the former State Representative from District 86, who now imagines himself moving up to the State Senate against the solid and widely respected Kathy Love in Senate District 43.

Now, to be fair, the Montana Legislature processes around a thousand bills in a session, and some of them are pretty harmless. A few even pass with broad bipartisan support. For example, voting to make rodeo the official Montana state sport isn’t exactly a decision that will shake the foundations of Western civilization.

But when analysts and legislative monitoring groups looked at the votes that actually mattered — the consequential ones — and compiled their scorecards, something interesting popped out.

Across multiple evaluations, Dave Bedey landed in roughly the bottom 11% of Republican legislators barely above several Democrats.

Which leads to an important takeaway for the traveling and voting public.

The next time you’re standing there at a Montana gas station, staring at that little tray of sushi and wondering whether to risk it…

Just remember:

Your confidence in that gas station sushi is more than 200% higher than the public trust rating of Dave Bedey.

And frankly, the sushi at least comes with a warning label. ?
