This past week, Montana Freedom Caucus members attended the State Freedom Caucus Foundation annual summit in Dallas, Texas. They walked away with nominations for four national awards and won one of them. The award they won was for the “Best Out of Session Fight.”

The summit features training sessions for state directors and state legislators, as well as updates from current and former members of the House Freedom Caucus, based in Washington, D.C. Featured speakers included Governor Ron DeSantis, The Honorable Tom Homan, as well as House Freedom Caucus members (past or present) Congressmen Chip Roy, Keith Self, Mark Meadows, Andy Biggs, Bob Good, Brandon Gill, Mike Collins, and Ralph Norman.

The event brought together over 200 Freedom Caucus legislators from thirteen states, as well as numerous media outlets.

Multiple other allied organizations sent representatives to thank caucus members for their hard work on behalf of the American people.

The network’s awards dinner was the final event of the three-day summit. Multiple awards were presented, such as the “Best State Freedom Caucus,” “Best State Director,” and “Best Floor Fight,” among others.

The impetus for the “Best Out Of Session Fight” award nomination began during the 2025 Montana legislative session, when the “Nasty-9” Senators aligned and voted with the Democratic minority to give the minority party control in the Montana Senate. This alignment created a “working majority” that killed legislation addressing long-term property tax solutions and increased the state budget by eighteen percent, while also working against the Senate GOP leadership. The caucus kept the pressure on the “Nasty-9” throughout the session, resulting in the nine Senators getting censured by the Montana State GOP, where each of the nine was informed that they lost the support of the State GOP (including any funding) and could no longer be recognized as Republicans.

The Caucus remained on the offensive after this year’s legislative session concluded in April. In June, the Freedom Caucus led an effort to remove the nine’s right to vote at the party’s summer convention, where the members of the State Central Committee elected new officers for the executive board of the Montana Republican Party. The overwhelming majority of voters at the convention agreed with removing the nine’s voting rights. Eight of the “Nasty-9” attended the convention either in person or through a proxy.

The eight senators’ votes would not have changed the outcome of any officer elected to the party’s executive board if they had been allowed to vote; however, the grassroots of the party made it clear that they were not happy with the actions of the nine and demanded they be held accountable for their actions.

Due to the Montana Freedom Caucus’ continuous exposure of the actions of the nine during and after the session, the Montana Freedom Caucus was the clear winner of the State Freedom Caucus Networks’ award for “Best Out of Session Fight.”
