After a long period of debate, today the Montana Senate failed to expel Senator Jason Ellsworth. According to Senate rules, a 2/3 majority vote was needed to expel him, and only 27 agreed by voting yes.

Senator Ellsworth allegedly broke the law, violated rules, and violated ethics because he attempted to manipulate state contracts and enrich a friend when he submitted two identical contracts to “reduce the cost” of each and bypass the required oversight and approvals process for contracts in excess of $100,000. This is called bifurcating a contract and it was done so then Senate President Ellsworth could sign off on the contracts without oversight using Senate President funds and give both contracts to a personal friend. The violation was caught by government staff.

Senate Democrats Vote to Protect Republican Corruption

Today Democrats serving in the Montana State Senate voted to defend and protect a corrupt Republican state senator over upholding the integrity of the Senate and the public trust.

14 out of 18 Senate Democrats voted against expelling Senator Jason Ellsworth, R-Hamilton, from the Senate for good cause of a years-long pattern of behavior of unethical conduct, abuse of his elected position, and retaliation against everyone seeking to hold him accountable. In contrast, a supermajority of Republican senators voted to uphold the integrity of the Senate and expel Ellsworth.

“It defies common sense that Democrats would vote to protect a Republican who’s committed multiple ethical violations and may face criminal charges, but that’s the inexplicable choice most Democratic senators made today,” said Sen. Tom McGillvray, R-Billings, the Senate Majority Leader. “I’m proud of the supermajority of our Republican caucus who voted for ethical integrity and for consequences for the senator who violated the public trust placed in him as an elected official.”
