In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote in The American Crisis, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country.” Paine was describing those who are eager to stand up when times are easy, but disappear when real sacrifice is required.

That passage has always stayed with me because it reminds us that public service is supposed to be exactly that—service. Not convenience. Not ambition. And certainly not comfort.

That is why I am proud to support Trevor Walter for the Montana House of Representatives.

I have had the opportunity to get to know Trevor well, and I can say without hesitation that he is the opposite of the “summer soldier” Paine warned about. Trevor is stepping forward to serve at a time when doing so requires real courage and real sacrifice. Running for office today often means taking on personal criticism, giving up precious time with family, and shouldering financial burdens that few people ever see.

Trevor is doing it anyway.

He is running not because it is easy, but because he believes deeply in Montana, in faith, in integrity, and in doing what is right even when it comes at a cost. That kind of character cannot be manufactured during a campaign—it comes from a lifetime of living by principle.

Montana needs leaders with backbone, people who are willing to stand firm when the pressure comes and who remember that they answer first to the people they represent. From everything I have seen, Trevor Walter has the courage and the moral compass for that responsibility.

I believe he will serve the people of Montana well.

When the times test us—as they always do—I am confident Trevor will not shrink from the service of his state. Instead, he will stand and do the work that needs to be done.

That is exactly the kind of leadership Montana deserves.
