On this Presidents' Day, as we reflect on George Washington’s legacy, we see how history often repeats itself. Benedict Arnold’s betrayal in 1780 reminds us of the painful consequences of disloyalty, especially when it comes from someone once trusted.

Arnold, a trusted general in Washington’s army, defected to the British, planning to hand over the key fort at West Point with troops and supplies. When discovered, his treason struck a resounding blow to the morale of the Continental Army and Washington personally, who had supported Arnold throughout his career. Like the recent Jason Ellsworth and the “Out of Line Nine” betrayal, it was a gut blow, a setback, and it created much disillusionment.

Washington’s reaction was one of deep hurt, anger, and disappointment. Arnold’s decision to side with the enemy was a moral affront, and the loss of West Point threatened the American cause. Washington’s ability to lead through this betrayal was a mixture of emotional pain and pragmatic resolve.

In a modern context, Montana Senator Jason Ellsworth’s actions echo Arnold’s disloyalty. Along with other members of the “out of line nine,” Ellsworth has turned against the Republican cause and they have joined forces with the Democratic Party. This shift mirrors Arnold’s betrayal: once trusted, Ellsworth’s alignment with those seen as enemies of the cause raises questions of loyalty and integrity. Those of us who are loyal to the True Republican Vision
are hurt, dismayed, and alarmed.

Just as Washington had to adjust after Arnold’s treason, Montana’s Republican Party now faces the consequences of this disloyalty. Like Arnold’s, the betrayal isn't just about political differences but the erosion of trust from those once counted as allies. Washington’s response to Arnold was to focus on the greater good, and similarly, True, loyal Montana Republicans must maintain their commitment to their cause despite betrayal. The American Revolution and modern-day Montana politics offer the same lesson: loyalty to a cause is essential, and those who betray it harm not only immediate efforts but also the trust, heart, and soul of those who once believed in them. Just as Washington rose above Arnold’s betrayal, Montana’s Republicans must continue to fight for their principles and uphold the effort. History repeats itself, and those in positions of power who have failed in their duty and committed political adultery will be judged just as harshly as the figures of the past.

Let us never forget that George Washington and the Patriot Cause overcame the setback caused by Benedict Arnold and won the long-term battle. We, too, in Montana, will overcome this short-term setback and, in the years ahead, will find victory as well. There is a God above who sees all, and he is still on his Throne. In the greater Eternal scheme of things, Justice Prevails!   COUNT ON IT!
