"Going down the rabbit hole" today, means critically thinking about subjects that the masses would much rather avoid, either out of fear, reprisal, shunning or some other perceived risk.
A modern example would be avoiding the rabbit hole of the 2020 election and the unresolved issues of purported fraud for fear of crossing the mainstream media’s continued assertion that any charges of fraud contributed to the "big lie" of disinformation.
Today Lewis Carroll might warn us al, "Go down these rabbit holes at your own peril, lest ye be adorned with tin foil hats and ridicule."
