Despite property taxes dominating headlines across Montana through the fall of 2023, the Montana Freedom Caucus' call to address the issue via a special legislative session in January 2024 failed to pass. Seventy-six "yes" votes were necessary in order to move forward. Instead, only fifty-five voted "yes," sixty-seven voted "no," and twenty-eight did not return their ballots. Ballots not returned are counted as "no" votes.
A Montana Freedom Caucus press release dated January 2, 2024 highlighted the voting results and encouraged all Montanans to call their representatives to address any concerns. The same press release contained the voting results chart so all could see how or if their representative voted.
Montana Talks also weighed in on the topic in an article today.
As Montana approaches its primary election season property taxes will remain high on the list of concerns. Additionally, sources are telling the Montana Sentinel that some legislators intend to use high property taxes as an excuse to bring in a sales tax to the state. Montanans voted down two previous initiatives to bring in a sales tax, which constitutionally could not exceed four percent.
